Finding my Lifetime (Hopefully) Soul Mate
As Told by : Maggie, Age 39
Here’s the thing - I would never have ever imagined myself being connected with my boyfriend by way of the Internet! And yet, that’s precisely what happened. My story begins on a cold December night, 2008. I was reading through postings on Facebook and I saw a comment left on my friend’s wall. I didn’t understand the entire premise of Facebook and I considered myself to be a FB novice. What I did know was that this man was funny...funny and cute! But I wondered what I should do?
I am certain that because it was the Internet, I felt less awkward about making the “first move”. So I sent a private message to this handsome person. Lo and behold, I received a message back from him within moments. For the next several hours we communicated via private messages with each other. The more that I read his messages, the more I liked him. I remember asking myself, “Is this even possible?”
How did typed words on a computer screen have such an impact on me that night? And, how do the typed words on a computer screen continue to have such an impact on me now? I had never considered that any kind of dating online could result in a relationship. But the fact is, I wouldn’t have met my sweetheart had it not been for the Internet. And if I had met him in person, I am certain that I would have fumbled my words, or that my shyness might have been mistaken for snobbery.
After that first encounter, our regular communication occurred through email, text messages and through social media sites until it was time for our first face-to-face meeting. I realized then, and still know now, the value of my Internet connection.
At first, I was a bit embarrassed to admit that I had met my boyfriend online because I thought the Internet was reserved for the square pegs trying to fit in the round holes. Boy was I wrong. Never in a lifetime did I think I would meet my soul mate on the Internet, but it has allowed me to do just that. I have met the man of my dreams...my lifetime soul mate.

Maggie’s feelings about finding love on the Internet are probably fairly similar to those of many other singles out there. In fact, the belief that there is something wrong with people who try to find a mate online is probably what keeps so many from trying it in the first place! Maggie did not expect to be attracted to someone based only on “typed words on a computer screen” but it happened to her in a big way.
Online dating and social media web sites provide a great opportunity to interact with others in a relatively safe environment. In Maggie’s case, she was able to get a good idea of how this man communicated with others just by reading his comments. She could tell he was witty and might very well have some other traits that appealed to her. She was also better able to have the courage to contact him because it was online. Could the Internet help you find a connection such as this one? Like Maggie, you will never know until you try!
