Bacon : Putting the Sizzle Back in Dating

Love may do its part to bring us together, but it’s apparent that food can have a big place in doing that as well. And there are some foods that seem to cause a little more excitement than others based on what I have discovered while looking on the Internet. One of the biggest food craze culprits? Bacon. Yes...bacon.

Believe it or not, there is an online dating site that has a page dedicated to lovers of the popular pork product, called “Singles interested in bacon” : www.mingle2.com/interests/bacon. It is also not uncommon to find requests in online dating profiles like this one from www.rsvp.com.au: “I want a man that eats bacon and eggs in the morning not pop tarts.”

That’s a pretty specific request! And it may sound silly to you non-bacon lovers, but it got me thinking about the role food plays in bringing us together. Obviously bacon is a food that appeals to a wide variety of people. I decided to poll some of my friends on my Facebook page to see what they had to say about bacon. The results ranged from the serious to the ridiculous :

  • “Bacon is perfect...it represents the good old days when people didn't freak out every two seconds about food.” - Nicole K.
  • “Everything is nothing without bacon.” - Darin C.
  • “Bacon brought down the Berlin wall.” - Lisa B.

It is safe to say that some people are clearly passionate about certain foods! So how does this relate to dating? Simply put - food and dating are most certainly connected. When you share a meal together, you are sharing a memory. And it’s not just bacon that is hogging all the attention (pun intended), but other specific foods as well.

There are online dating sites dedicated to singles that love food in general like Food Lovers Online Dating (www.foodloversonlinedating.com) and Taste Central (www.tastecentral.com) which states that it is the place “where people who love food find each other.”

In the UK, there is an Internet dating service called Food Dating. According the web site (www.fooddating.co.uk), it advertises a form of dating that is, “a new way of meeting the man or woman of your dreams in an informal atmosphere, with food, some candlelight, a glass of wine and a touch of romance. Unlike Speed Dating or Slow Dating, there is no pressure and a maximum time limit to sit and talk over several different courses to different people.”

So by now you should be convinced that food and dating are closely related. The old saying is that the “way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Perhaps this is the case for anyone who is looking for love?
