A Random Act of Kindness Makes a Lasting Impression

As Told by : Anne, age 40

The year was 1991 and I went out to pick up a quick movie with my friend Elizabeth at Blockbuster Video. While we were there perusing the endless selections of early-90’s movie masterpieces, my good friend spots two guys looking for movies nearby. Being very outgoing, she strikes up a conversation with one of the fellows; all the while I, being the mature, shy, and appalled friend, quickly fled to the other side of the store. Fifteen minutes later, Elizabeth was still trying to pry movie suggestions out of one of guys when they made their way to my side of the store. One thing led to another and the next thing I knew we were headed to the movies with him in tow!

We decided to go the $1.50 theater complex and watch “Kindergarten Cop”. Somehow, before getting to the window to pay, I managed to lose my buck fifty for the movie, which was the only cash I had. Elizabeth did not have any additional money to help me out, but without missing a beat, the nice boy we picked up at Blockbuster offered to pay my way in. His name was John and at this point I was really glad he tagged along with us – and I was pretty impressed at how quickly he jumped in to pay for my ticket (and by now, I had also noticed that he was very attractive).

Following the movie, we headed to Taco Bell because it was all John could afford (since it had already been determined that he was the only one who had any money). As the night ended he asked for a phone number so he could reach us again. Thinking I was being clever, I gave him Elizabeth’s number. He then looked at me and asked for my phone number too, so he must have been on to me!

We took John back to the video store and said our goodbyes thinking we would probably never see him again. The next day, however, he called me and asked me to go bowling with him. I agreed and that began our dating relationship. A few years later we got married and eventually had five wonderful children. So while I don’t recommend picking up random guys like we did, it sure worked out for me. The relationship of my lifetime started out at a video store, then a movie theater and eventually Taco Bell. And just like he did long ago at the theater, he is still taking good care of me and our family to this day.

Wright from the Heart

Like Anne said, it’s probably not a good idea to pick up strange men while you are out on the town, but in her case it luckily resulted in a lifetime love connection with her soul mate! Such a small gesture of paying for Anne’s movie ticket made quite an impression on her. Do you ever wonder if your actions are helping you or hindering you when it comes to dating? Are you making a good impression on those around you? Sometimes it can be hard to tell, but it’s something that is important to determine.

One thing is for sure – a little kindness goes a long way to making a lasting impression and in Anne and John’s case, a lasting memory. You never know when you have met someone that you could potentially share a connection with, either right now or possibly in the future. Always try your best to be helpful and considerate to those around you because you never know when one of those persons is your lifetime soul mate.
